Thome Takes The Road Less Traveled and Succeeds...

Peter Thome played Minneapolis Park Board hockey (Lynnhurst Park) through squirts. He loved the game and loved playing hockey. He wanted a bigger challenge than Park Board hockey and signed up to play Storm hockey as a first year peewee. As a "rookie" to high end travelling hockey in 2008-09, Thome's Storm career started with playing goalie on the Storm Peewee B2 team. His second year he played Peewee B1. The 2010-11 season he jumped to Storm Bantam B1.

His passion for the position grew and grew...as did his talent and size. As Thome moved towards his second year of Bantams he enrolled at Benilde St. Margarets (BSM). Because the Storm had two returning Bantam A goalies the crease position was full at the highest level. Peter took advantage of Minnesota Hockey's "Play where you live or go to school rule" and played Bantam A for Saint Louis Park where they were short on goalies and Peter could continue to be challenged and grow.

As a sophomore it became clear that there was no path for him at BSM because the coaching staff had brought in two goalies and Peter would not get a chance to show what he could do. Once again, the crease position was full and Thome needed to find another option. Because Minnesota High School transfer rules require a player to sit out a full year, transferring to another school to play would not have been viable.

So, he took the rare step for Minnesota players, going to play Midget Minor AAA hockey for the Chicago Fury U16 team his junior year of high school. Things went well enough that in 2013-14, he played on the Fury's Midget Major U18 team and began putting up big time stats.

The stats didn't go unnoticed when the USHL's (USA Tier 1 Juniors) Omaha Lancers drafted him. Their crease was full however, so instead he played the 2015-16 season with the Aberdeen Wings of the NAHL (USA Tier II Juniors).

He tore up the NAHL last year having the NAHL's best save percentage (.929) and being named to the Central Division Rookie Team. The University of North Dakota came calling and he has signed to play Division I NCAA hockey with the Fighting Hawks.

Yesterday, the NHL placed their bet on Peter when the Columbus BlueJackets drafted the 6'3"/195 pound goal-robber in the 6th round of this year's draft.

The Storm congratulates Peter on following his passion, working hard, ignoring roadblocks, and achieving his dreams. Way to go Peter!
